Can Identity Be Relativized?
What is the scope of identity? The intuitive response is that it applies everywhere, since every object is identical to itself. In this sense, identity is a general concept. In this chapter, I argue for the generality of identity by critically examining some attempts at relativizing it. I argue that each alleged instance of relativization ultimately presupposes identity, and as a result, identi...
متن کاملNon-Commutative Sylvester's Determinantal Identity
Sylvester’s identity is a classical determinantal identity with a straightforward linear algebra proof. We present combinatorial proofs of several non-commutative extensions, and find a β-extension that is both a generalization of Sylvester’s identity and the β-extension of the quantum MacMahon master theorem.
متن کاملStruggling to be Fit: Identity, Integrity, and the Law
This interdisciplinary co-authored Analysis piece introduces identity and integrity, which are argued to sit at the core of the person. It analyses approaches taken to these concepts by legal regimes, particularly in the context of individuals using artificial limbs or digital avatars. The piece concludes that law engages with identity and integrity to a limited and incomplete extent; and that ...

متن کاملNon-commutative Sylvester’s determinantal identity, preprint
Sylvester's identity is a classical determinantal identity with a straightforward linear algebra proof. We present a new, combinatorial proof of the identity, prove several non-commutative versions, and find a β-extension that is both a generalization of Sylvester's identity and the β-extension of the MacMahon master theorem.
